Allow yourself the luxury of trying things you don't normally think you can do. Give yourself permission to look silly, make a fool out of yourself, admit what you don't know, enjoy the process. You will burst out of your comfort zone and experience a whole new level of energy and growth. (Page 27)
Imagine a lake that is rippled or choppy by a breeze. If you take notice, all the images that are reflected in the lake take on the rippled, unclear appearance. But if that lake becomes calm and smooth, so too are all the images smooth and clear.
Taking a deep breath does the same thing to your mind. When you are under stress, your mind is similar to that rippled lake. Everything reflecting into your consciousness takes on a fragmented, unclear appearance. Once you take that deep breath, your mind becomes like the calm lake. Suddenly everything is clearer, you can make wiser decisions, and you feel more at peace. (Page 34)
Dressing for success used to be fairly easy. There were rules that made sense, and were universally accepted throughout the business world. Not so any more. With the advent of "business casual," dressing for work has become a nightmare!
A basic rule of thumb: Dress for the position you want, not necessarily the position you currently possess.
A Corollary: Choose clothing that is appropriate for the situation and at the same time projects the best image possible. (Page 121)
There's nothing like experience to understand another person's point of view. This was brought home to me vividlty in a recent workshop I conducted. It was held at the client's site, and several people rolled their own desk chairs into the meeting room. One of the activities required people to move around and work in different groups. All of a sudden, the Comptroller yelled out, "Who's chair is this? It is the most uncomfortable thing I've ever sat in!" His secretary stood up and said, "That's what I've been trying to tell you for months!" He looked somewhat sheepish, then said, "When we get back to our office, write yourself a requisition for a new chair!"
There's nothing like experience! (Pages 142-143)
Bring some harmony to your life by applying this Harmony Principle: Every time you touch a piece of paper, move it one step closer to completion — or — throw it away! (Page 254)
