A Few Soundbytes From the Book

In our opinion, one of the critical skills a leader must develop is the ability to identify options. Being able to look at a situation from several different angles, then forming alternatives for action, will help you maintain your confidence, inspire your people, and always stay in control—no matter what. Plus, it's a great skill to teach your people. (Page 16)

"I didn't have a choice" moments are cop-out moments! Essentially, you choose powerlessness and victimhood over accomplishment and achievement. "I didn't have a choice" moments are cries for sympathy or collusion-seeking for your declared victim staus. ... One of the best empowerment gifts you can give your direct reports is the following statement: You will manage your life when you manage yourself, and you will manage yourself when you manage your choices. (Pages 20, 26)

Effective leaders take the time to understand the qualities they need to lead and mentor others. They work on developing these core abilities, and move forward confidently, knowing they are getting better as they continue using the skills that characterize extraordinay leaders. (Page 82)

The status quo is merely convenient and familiar. And oftentimes it makes difficulties out of opportunities. In forward-thinking organizations, the status quo is simply unacceptable. Questioning the status quo is healthy. Throoughly engaged employees see the upside of challenging the status quo. And one of the highest callings of extraordinary leaders is keeping the status quo in its place—far behind company growth, profitability, and sustainability. In fact, our favorite recommendation is to constantly challenge "unquestioned answers." (Page 110)

When someone brings another person's problems to you, your first question needs to be, "Have you talked with him/her about this?" Many problems disappear when you refuse to get caught in the middle. Encourage all employees to refuse to discuss an issue when the person being talked about is not present. (Page 173)
